Six gears direct-drive transmission and three shifts automatic transmission/ torque converter performance is shown in figure above. In the figure we can see that three shift on torque converter have the power transfer bands as smooth as the power line produced with six shifts. However, the automatic transmission has higher power loss which is indicated by the power line graph.

The automatic transmission clutches are activated by activating solenoid valves to allow the pressurized fluid flowing to the clutch actuator. The typical pressure for clutches activation is 500 psi range.

The automatic transmission is an important fluid power application. Using this technology, engineers may add a built in safety feature to prevent the engine from being over speed by an overrunning load.
