Open Center Sliding Spool Directional Control Valve Schematic

In an open-center sliding spool directional control valve, the spool is designed to pass all flows on all its passages when the valve is centered. In some types, the fluid from hydraulic pump is passed to the reservoir through other side of the valve while the cylinder port is blocked.

To keep the directional control valve in balance the fluid must be carried to both ends of the piston. When the valve is centered, the fluid will not be flown to reservoir but it will be directed to other valve to create a sequenced operation.

The open-center sliding spool directional control valves are used if the cylinder is remained in its position although the pressure is no longer applied. These valves can avoid system shock during valve spool movement since the pressure is relieved to the reservoir in the intermediate position.
